BTG strides through Trekfest challenge for cancer charity

London, UK, 09 September 2015

BTG, the specialist healthcare company, took up the Trekfest Challenge in the Peak District (5-6 September) for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and expects to raise more than £8K for the organisation which supported a colleague who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year.

More than 40 employees from BTG’s UK sites in Farnham, Camberley, London and Wales elected to walk 54 miles in 24 hours, 27 miles in 12 hours or 13 miles in 6 hours. The terrain was hard going but the sun shone and BTG trekkers of all levels soldiered on to meet the challenge. The group of three BTG trekkers who completed the 54-mile walk in just under 17 hours, were the first to cross the finish line at 1:30 AM.

Ruth Bunn, BTG’s Charity Coordinator, participated in the 27-mile trek, and said: “Trekfest ‘The Peaks’ was tough with steep inclines, even steeper descents and very uneven terrain.  We had to keep our wits about us, watching every step as well as avoiding the free-roaming sheep. It’s been an excellent team challenge and events like these really bridge the geographical gap between our BTG sites.

“We also wanted to celebrate the life of our colleague Vince O’Byrne, and give something back to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity that gave him and his family so much support. I’m delighted that we’ve raised a great deal of money for the charity and that the total is still climbing.”

All of the BTG sites agreed that fundraising at Trekfest was a fitting way to mark the life and dedication of Vincent O’Byrne who worked at the Farnham and Camberley sites. He worked for the company for more than 20 years and achieved a great deal in his professional life, developing products for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and cancer.  Vincent was a valued member of BTG and his friends and colleagues have many happy and unforgettable memories of him.
