Marlborough, Mass. (January 20, 2015) – Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX), a global medical device company headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts, will co-sponsor the 2015 Massachusetts Medical Device Development (M2D2) Center’s New Venture Competition. The 4th annual nationwide competition, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell is designed to showcase innovative ideas and encourage entrepreneurialism among early-stage medical device companies.

Up to $100,000 of in-kind services will be awarded, including business, engineering, clinical, regulatory and medical device assistance from Boston Scientific, competition co-sponsors and M2D2, the joint initiative of the University of Massachusetts’ Lowell and Worcester campuses.
“We look forward to seeing the competing companies develop products from proof-of-concept to commercialization, gain exposure to potential investors and help grow the medical-device cluster in Massachusetts,” said Stephen McCarthy, M2D2 director and professor of plastics engineering, University of Massachusetts Lowell. “M2D2 appreciates Boston Scientific’s support of the New Venture Competition and its medical device entrepreneurs.”
For the competition, Boston Scientific has identified three areas of interest where innovative medical solutions can help improve the health of patients, address unmet medical needs and reduce the cost of healthcare:
• Additive Manufacturing for Implantable Devices
Solutions for additive manufacturing methods and/or materials to prepare implantable medical devices, including those with and without biological material
• Use of Flexible Electronics to Provide Innovative Implantable Devices
Solutions for in vivo use of flexible electronics for medical device applications to treat or diagnose patients
• Small Form-factor Imaging (65K+ pixels) and Single Pixel Cameras
Solutions for a small form factor imager with 65K+ pixels or a single pixel camera in a less than 1mm diameter capable of working under low light conditions along with a provision for 2 – 3m signal transmission length.
All applicants must submit an initial application by January 30, which will be reviewed by M2D2. Finalists will be invited to present their concepts in-person at a University of Massachusetts Lowell public event on April 1, 2015, and the winners will be announced at the Boston office of Mintz Levin on April 16, 2015.
