Before his diagnosis with atrial fibrillation, Mike Olson had boundless energy for time with his wife, kids and grandkids.

Mike Olson has always been full of energy. Whether taking on home improvement projects or tending to the yard, Olson thrives on keeping active. According to his wife Laura, he’s happiest when he has a project in the works.

But over time, something in Olson started to change.

“The decline was gradual,” he recalls. “Yard work was getting harder, and things that never bothered me started to feel exhausting, but I thought I was just getting older.”

Then one day his daughter, Katy Jo, gave him a hug and noticed something was off. She asked him why his heart was beating so fast, but Olson had no idea what she was talking about. He checked his blood pressure, but couldn’t even get a reading because his heart was in such an erratic rhythm. A trip to the doctor revealed something far more serious: Mike was in heart failure due to atrial fibrillation.

”It hit me like a ton of bricks,“ he admits. ”Heart failure? Me? That was when I knew I needed to take this seriously.“
