Guidant Honored by Two Prestigious Publications

Guidant Named one of FORTUNE Magazine''s 100 Fastest Growing Companies and IndustryWeek''s 100 Best Managed Companies

Indianapolis, IN - Guidant Corporation (NYSE and PCX: GDT), a worldwide leader in the medical technology industry, today announced that it has been named to two distinguished lists. The first is FORTUNE Magazine''s Fastest Growing Companies in America listing. As part of this listing, Guidant was also chosen by FORTUNE as one of the ten emerging growth companies - the "Best of the Bunch" - that possess the management depth, dynamic products and unlimited market opportunity to become a superstock. The second honor is Guidant''s selection as one of world''s 100 Best Managed Companies by IndustryWeek Magazine.

"Guidant is extremely proud to be recognized by these two prestigious publications," commented Ronald W. Dollens, chief executive officer. "These accomplishments are a direct reflection of our employee-owners'' dedication to excellence as we strive to save and improve lives around the world. This commitment will continue to foster our success as we realize the extraordinary growth opportunities of our future."

FORTUNE Magazine''s annual list of the 100 Fastest Growing Companies in America was compiled by Zacks Investment Research. The list is comprised of companies that are based in the U.S., have been in operation for three years, and have revenues and a market capitalization of at least $50 million. In addition, the companies must have a 30 percent annual growth rate for three years in both revenue and earnings per share, and positive earnings in the latest quarter. The companies were then ranked by growth in revenue, EPS and total stock market return over three years.

In addition to its Fastest Growing Companies list, FORTUNE also selected ten stocks in four businesses that were considered by leading money managers and Ian MacMillan, executive director of the entrepreneurship program at the Wharton School, as the "Best of the Bunch." Guidant was selected as a winner in the health category due to its promising new products, its commitment to research and development, and the strength of its management team.

Early this year, Guidant was also named to FORTUNE''s 100 Best Companies to Work for in America and America''s Most Admired Companies listing. The Fastest Growing Companies and Best of the Bunch listings appear on FORTUNE''s website and in the Sept. 4 edition of FORTUNE Magazine.

As previously mentioned, Guidant has also been named one of the world''s 100 Best Managed Companies by IndustryWeek Magazine. The 100 Best Managed Companies are the world''s leaders in innovative management strategies. Candidates for the list were culled from the IndustryWeek 1000, a list of the world''s largest publicly held manufacturing companies based on revenues.

Each company was selected after a lengthy evaluation that included:

  • Analysis of the company''s financial performance ;

  • Review of a questionnaire that each company completed

  • Research into the company''s practices in areas such as philanthropy and safety

  • Voting by a panel of more than 90 business leaders, analysts and academicians

The report is currently available on IndustryWeek''s website and will appear in the Aug. 21 issue of IndustryWeek.

A global leader in the medical technology industry, Guidant provides innovative, minimally invasive and cost-effective products and services for the treatment of cardiovascular and vascular disease.
