Guidant Named One of FORTUNE's 100 Best Companies To Work For

Company Named To Prestigious Ranking For Third Time in Four Years

Indianapolis, Ind. - Guidant Corporation (NYSE and PCX: GDT), a world leader in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, today announced that it has been selected as one of FORTUNE's 100 Best Companies to Work For. The listing appears in the Feb. 4 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands Jan. 28.

"Making the FORTUNE list is extremely gratifying given that employees, who provide the foundation for all of the company's capabilities, were so instrumental in selecting us as a great place to work," said Ronald W. Dollens, president and chief executive officer of Guidant. "This accomplishment also reflects the extraordinary energy and commitment of our employee-owners to saving and improving lives throughout the world. We are honored to be a part of this prestigious list for the third time in four years."

The companies named to FORTUNE's 100 Best Companies to Work For are chosen by the Great Place to Work Institute of San Francisco. The institute determines the list by conducting a survey of a randomly selected group of employees from more than 279 companies across the United States to evaluate trust in management, pride in work and the company and camaraderie. This, coupled with written comments from the survey respondents, comprises two-thirds of the company's score. The remaining third is determined by each company's responses to the institute's culture audit, in which the company explains its philosophy and practices.

Guidant Corporation pioneers lifesaving technology, giving an opportunity for better life today to 7 million cardiac and vascular patients worldwide. The company, driven by a strong entrepreneurial culture of 10,000 employees, develops, manufactures and markets a broad array of products and services that enable less invasive care for some of life's most threatening medical conditions.
