Progress in diversity relies on meaningful collaboration

As a leading global medical device manufacturer, our ability to drive innovation and fulfill our mission to help transform lives for millions of patients around the world requires fast iteration, creative problem-solving and diverse perspectives.

The concept of diversity and inclusion as a business imperative is proven by countless studies demonstrating that companies with diverse workforces outperform their counterparts. According to a study by Deloitte, companies with more inclusive cultures are three times more likely to be high-performing, and twice more likely to meet or exceed financial targets.

As a manager on our diversity and inclusion team, I’ve learned that cultivating and sustaining a diverse workplace requires us to work with partners who share our commitment to creating clearer pathways for diverse talent. Our relationship with Becoming Everything You Are (BEYA) is one such example. For more than three decades, BEYA has been a pioneer in supporting, developing and celebrating multicultural talent across Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines.

Since 2014, Boston Scientific has participated in the annual BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference. Now in its 34th year, the event has inspired generations of STEM leaders and created opportunities for many companies, including Boston Scientific, to recruit some of the best minds in science and engineering. This year’s theme, the Global Catalyst for Change: Making the untapped potential possible, served as a powerful reminder of the business value of diverse representation in STEM fields.

Throughout the three-day conference, our team met with nearly 900 university and experienced diverse candidates and broke our record for on the spot job offers. We also celebrated the accomplishments of leaders in STEM, including four Boston Scientific employees, Kamani Padayachee, Saurabh Sinha, Meera Ramakrishnan and Anibal Cartagena. Their exceptional careers and actions that have energized the Boston Scientific community and their commitment to shaping the future of STEM exemplify the importance of diverse talent at Boston Scientific.

Boston Scientific is making progress towards our diversity and inclusion goals, but we still have a lot of work to do. Together, we will create a more diverse and inclusive industry where innovation thrives.
